The main aim of this course is to provide a deeper level knowledge of the teaching of English to speakers of other languages. It allows graduates of the course to be officially registered as a TESOL professional as well as opening up opportunities to teach TESOL in quality institutions around the world. The general objectives of the course require the student to be able to demonstrate a general understanding of, and familiarity with, the world of teaching English to speakers of other languages including general terminology, the profession's qualifications, further training options and career opportunities. The course enables the student demonstrate a basic understanding of the communicative approach to teaching English to speakers of other languages.

TESOL Course Requirements
The examination for the VirtuKno Preliminary Certificate of Educational Studies in TESOL consists of six units. Candidates are required to successfully complete all assignments contained in each unit of the distance training program. There is also a post mid-course essay and a practical teaching project and a final assessment paper.

The Study of Language: The nature and scope of general and applied linguistics, psycholinguistics, and sociolinguistics; the structures and functions of language, context of situation and use.
The Study of English: Use and usage; syntax and meaning; word classes and word formation; noun, preposition, adjective, and verb phrases; forms and functions of the tenses; cohesion; aspects of lexis; phonetics and phonology, including the articulation of vowel and consonant sounds; linkage and assimilation; stress and intonation, the International Phonetic Association symbols, problems of transcription, etc.; 'standards' and international intelligibility.
TESOL: Sources and problems of motivation at different age-levels; subject-matter and procedures; teaching-learning approaches, with particular emphasis on humanistic aspects and task-based communicative activities; receptive and productive skills, reading and listening materials; speaking and writing; integration of skills; discovery techniques; language games; oral and written forms of practice and interaction; problem-solving activities; simulation and role-play; pair-work and group-work; audiovisual aids.
